Drawing plays an extremely important role in the life of every child and is especially significant for a child's emotional, social, and cognitive development. Through drawing, a child expresses their thoughts, feelings, fantasies, and develops fine motor skills, visual perception, as well as imagination and creativity. Creativity is one of the most crucial factors in the development of a child's drawing and is defined as the ability of each person to create a new, original product that will also be useful. A child's drawing evolves through four stages: the stage of expressing with primary symbols or the scribbling stage, the stage of expressing with complex symbols, the stage of intellectual realism, and the stage of visual realism. These four stages usually occur in the mentioned sequence, but it is important to emphasize that each child has their own pace of developing individual abilities. Besides being a means of expression that plays a vital role in the child's development and in recognizing their emotional states (which is also useful in diagnosing various difficulties a child may have and in recognizing trauma they might have been exposed to), drawing is also used for therapeutic purposes (art therapy). This type of therapy is particularly beneficial when working with children who have experienced various traumatic or stressful events in the past. Every drawing has its own value, purpose, and meaning. Therefore, when evaluating a child's drawing, the most important thing is to show that we care about what the child is expressing through the drawing, and that we care about how the child feels. In this way, our approach to a child's drawing can also be a means of expressing support to the child.
