Business mergers are the processes of connecting two or more companies into one, to achieve increased competitiveness, strengthening of market position, growth and business diversification. These mergers usually take place through acquisitions, mergers, or alliances. In Croatia, business mergers are regulated by the Companies Act. This law prescribes the merger procedure, including obligations to state authorities and obligations to shareholders. The merger must be approved by the shareholders' meeting of each of the merging companies and must then be registered in court records. Merger, acquisition, and acquisition are different types of business combinations, often used interchangeably. However, there are significant differences between them. Mergers and acquisitions occur when operating companies merge (merger) or take control (acquisition) of all or part of the operations of other companies. The goal of mergers and acquisitions is usually to create synergies, improve market position or achieve economies of scale. In a merger, two companies are combined into a single entity, while in an acquisition, one company takes control of the other, but the acquired company retains its separate legal identity.
