Abstract (english) Opera intended for children as the primary audience in recent times is not such an unusual phenomenon. Although opinions throughout history have mostly considered opera as entertainment for the privileged and affluent classes, time and modernization within society have shown exactly the opposite. Nowadays, opera is available to absolutely everyone, even the youngest. There is an increasing number of opera houses and theaters that offer at least one children's opera in their repertoire. Noticing the favorable effect of classical music in combination with theater has proven to be many times profitable for children. Exposure to quality music that is integrated into a story appropriate to a child's level of understanding has become an excellent way to develop a love of fine art. The aim of the research was to explore opera as a genre and the child as a potential audience of opera houses in Croatia. The research was based on the systematic review of available literature, the review of current children's operas in the area of the City of Zagreb in the period from mid-February to mid-April this year, and on a semi-structured interview built on twelve open-ended questions, which was implemented with Buga Marija Šimić, who is a director, an actress, an opera singer and artistic director of the Mala Scena Theater, Krešimir Dolenčić who is a Croatian opera and drama director, a producer, a screenwriter and a professor at the Academy of Dramatic Arts and finally with Tomislav Uhlik, a Croatian composer, a conductor and a music pedagogue. The results of the research showed the fact that there is a children's opera scene in Croatia, but it requires continuous empowerment and encouragement of diversity. It should be borne in mind that all viewed children's operas were mostly related to the area of the City of Zagreb, therefore it is also recommended to work on the availability of children's opera in other parts of the Republic of Croatia so that all children have equal opportunities for growth and development with this kind of musical content. The importance of this research is manifested in the promotion of children's opera scene in Croatia and the unification of all relevant information related to children's opera in one place.
